Solanco community encouraging sportsmanship among sports fans and parents

| December 18, 2013

Due to recent media coverage of fan behavior, particularly related to aggressive and personal verbal attacks of coaches and referees, representatives from Solanco sports booster clubs, parents, and school district personnel came together to discuss ways that this situation could be addressed.

While the initial feeling is that this is a societal issue, the group’s conversation focused on ways of working with the Solanco community to take the lead in setting a standard for positive behavior.  The booster clubs committed to getting their members to adhere to Solanco Expectations in their interactions with coaches and at events. The district committed to maintaining lines of communication to address concerns of parents in appropriate and timely manner.

The Solanco Expectations were created by the community, identifying those qualities that best support the type of community we want. Of the four qualities in the Solanco Expectations – Respect, Responsibility, Courage and Kindness – fans are asked to demonstrate Respect and Responsibility in their behavior while in attendance at Solanco athletic contests.  Respect can be demonstrated by expressing appreciation for the efforts of the players and by recognizing that the referees are officiating to the best of their abilities.  Fans need to understand their responsibility as role models, especially for the younger students who are in attendance, and that their behavior reflects upon the school they represent, whether as a student or adult.

To emphasize the importance of following these Expectations to enhance the  enjoyment of the competition, the Solanco School District has designated one night for each winter sport as Solanco Expectations Night.  Fans have been/will be admitted free to the games in return for a promise to adhere and model the Expectations of Respect and Responsibility while attending the games. Following are the dates for Solanco Expectations Night with free admission to a winter sports event: Wrestling-Tuesday, December 17. Boys basketball-Wednesday, December 18. Girls basketball-expected to be a game in early January against a Lancaster-Lebanon League opponent; more information will be released as soon as it’s available.
