Bart-Colerain wins prestigious National Blue Ribbon School award

| September 25, 2013

Bart-Colerain websiteFor the second time in seven years, Solanco’s Bart-Colerain Elementary School is receiving distinguished national recognition for academic excellence and the outstanding accomplishments of its students and teachers! U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan has announced that Bart-Colerain has been selected in the 2013 Blue Ribbon Schools Program. This is truly a prestigious honor as only 15 schools in Pennsylvania, and 286 schools nationwide, have been selected for the 2013 program. This is the second time Bart-Colerain has been included in the Blue Ribbon Schools Program; in 2006 Bart-Colerain became the first school in Lancaster County to ever be selected!

“I am very proud of Bart-Colerain Principal Mrs. Haines and the entire staff at Bart-Colerain,” Solanco Superintendent Dr. Martin Hudacs said. “This reflects on the hard work and dedication of the Bart staff and students, as well as a crowning achievement for the entire Solanco School District.”

Bart-Colerain Elementary School was nominated and then selected for the award because the school has consistently scored in the top 10 percent of all elementary schools in the entire state on PSSA tests (Pennsylvania System of School Assessment tests). There are about 8,000 public, private, parochial and charter schools in Pennsylvania that could be considered for this distinctive recognition.

Every April, elementary students in grades 3, 4 and 5 (and also students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades) take PSSA reading and math tests. Each student’s score is reported in one of four categories: Advanced Proficient, Proficient, Basic and Below Basic. Bart-Colerain students have been consistently outstanding. In 2013, 94 percent of Bart-Colerain 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students scored Proficient or Advanced in math, while 86 percent scored Proficient or Advanced in reading. Those exceptional scores are among the very highest in Pennsylvania!

“I am very proud of Bart-Colerain’s Blue Ribbon School designation,” said Sandra Haines. “Bart is an amazing school and community. The culture here is one of high expectations for all. Parents, teachers, support staff and administration are united in providing a challenging, positive school experience for all students.”

Sandra Haines and a teacher from Bart-Colerain will attend an award ceremony in Washington, D.C., November 18 and 19.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said, “National Blue Ribbon schools represent examples of educational excellence, and their work reflects the belief that every child in America deserves a world-class education.”

Dr. Hudacs stated, “It is achievements like this that continue to make Solanco the hidden gem of Lancaster County.”
