Distinguished Teachers - websiteSolanco High School math teacher Brenda Lloyd (left) and Swift Middle School guidance counselor Jennifer Pearson have been inducted into Solanco’s special Distinguished Teacher program. Distinguished Teachers is a prestigious award that honors teachers’ instructional excellence, extraordinary success working with students, and professional leadership.

Lloyd and Pearson officially received their Distinguished Teacher award at the Solanco School Board meeting on Monday, August 19. They both began their successful careers at Solanco in 1992. “Both Brenda and Jennifer are excellent additions to the list of Distinguished Educators of Solanco,” Solanco Superintendent Dr. Martin Hudacs said. “Their passion and dedication for the students are amazing.”

Lloyd is the class advisor for the Class of 2015, and a parent representative with the Lampeter-Strasburg Marching Band. In addition to teaching at Solanco High School, she is an adjunct faculty member at Harrisburg Area Community College, and a consultant course designer for blendedschools.net. “My career at Solanco has been rewarding due to the openness of the students, the support of the faculty and administration, and the understanding and cooperation of my family members.”

Pearson called it an “honor” to have been selected. “I love the Solanco community and enjoy working with the students, teachers, administration and parents. I enjoy my work with struggling students as well as our student PRIDE ambassadors.” Pearson serves on the Solanco Midget Football board of directors.

Lloyd and Pearson have received a Solanco shirt and a satchel, and their portraits are on display in the Solanco Administrative Office as part of their recognition for induction into the Distinguished Teacher program.

Eligibility requirements for the Distinguished Teacher award include a Master’s Degree, level II or permanent certification, and ten years in education, with at least three years in the Solanco School District. Teachers are nominated for the award by their colleagues or the principal of their school. Of the nominated teachers, no more than six, three elementary and three secondary teachers, may be selected at a time. Teachers who are nominated for the award must complete an application to be considered for selection as a Distinguished Teacher. The district’s supervision committee chooses a selection committee, consisting of teachers and administrators, to review the applications and guidelines in selecting teachers to be honored as Distinguished Teachers.

Teachers identified as Distinguished Teachers will serve in various types of mentorship roles for young instructors.
