A rousing farewell for Cleta Lee

| June 9, 2020

Cleta Lee1WEBAt times Tuesday afternoon, vehicles were backed up from in front of Smith Middle School to Route 472. They were decorated with signs such as “We love you,” “Congratulations,” and “We will miss you Cleta!” They were all there to give Smith Middle School secretary Cleta Lee a loud and joyous send-off into retirement.

Cleta Lee2WEBAs the end of the school year approached, Cleta mentioned that she was disappointed that the school closure caused by covid-19 had taken away her opportunity to say good-bye to students and staff one last time on the final day of school. So quickly and quietly, principal Paul Gladfelter, assistant principal David Beard and other Smith staff members began to quickly and quietly plan to provide Cleta with a final, stirring send-off that she deserved. On Tuesday, the final day of school (remote instruction), current and former teachers and staff members, current and former students, parents, friends and other community members took their turn in line to wish Cleta well, and to drop-off cards, balloons flowers and gifts in appreciation and in celebration of her successful 32-year career at Solanco.
