School Board - new membersWEBThree new members officially joined the Solanco School Board at the board meeting on Monday, December 2. They are Lee Kauffman, Jane Ausel and Byron Graybeal. They were elected to the board in November.

Lee Kauffman and his wife have five children. Three are Solanco High School graduates, one is a student at the high school, and their youngest attends Quarryville Elementary. “I want to give back to our school district and community which have been a big part of raising my family,” Kauffman said. “I embrace the conservative values that are evident in the board. My goal is to be an active part of continuing a high level of education for our students in a safe and inspiring environment.” Along with his brother, Kauffman owns and operates a construction company in Gap. He is an active member of Faith Reform Church in Quarryville. Kauffman was born and raised in Lancaster County and is a 1986 graduate of Lancaster Mennonite High School.

Jane Ausel is a retired Solanco teacher who was employed by the district for more than 26 years. “After recently retiring from teaching, I feel serving as a school director would be a wonderful way to give back to the school district and this community.  My desire is to strengthen the connection between the students, staff and the school board,” Ausel said.  “It is important to be a wise steward of taxpayers’ money while providing the very best education possible for students in the Solanco School District.” Jane and her husband Craig Ausel raised three sons in Quarryville. Jane Ausel is a 1976 Solanco graduate, and  earned a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Grove City College.

Byron Graybeal is a lifelong resident of Peach Bottom and a third-generation dairy farmer. “I decided to run for school director because I bring an agricultural perspective to our uniquely rural district. My goal as a school board director is to be fiscally responsible while providing high-quality educational opportunities to increase graduation and post-secondary opportunities.” Graybeal is a 1990 Solanco High School graduate, and he attended Delaware Valley College. He and his wife Carol, a Solanco school psychologist, have a son in 9th grade at Solanco High School and a daughter who is a 7th grade student at Swift Middle School.

At the December 2 meeting, Paul Plechner became the new president of the Solanco School Board. Plechner has served on the board since 2005, and had been serving as vice president. The directors of the nine-member Solanco School Board are Plechner, vice president Brian Musser, Jane Ausel, Craig Chubb, Byron Graybeal, Lee Kauffman, Justin Kreider, Kurt Kreider, and Charles “Chip” Roten.

The three new members replace Steve Risk, Dan Bender and Leon Ressler, who have recently retired after each served 20 years on the school board.
