Football players muscle their way to strong performances

Solanco football players scored very well at the annual Roadgrader’s Challenge for offensive and defensive linemen and tight ends on Saturday, June 8 at Manheim Central. Solanco High School Assistant Football Coach Mike Hammel said 43 teams from 15 schools competed in eight skills-based challenges, a 100-yard tire flip competition, and a tug-of-war tournament.

Roadgraders1WEBCongratulations to these Solanco students on their strong second place overall finish: Seth Harnish, Chad Carter, Nate Neuhauser, Justin Dagen, and Jake Frampton.

In finishing second, the team came in 3rd in the 185-pound bench press and 250-pound hex-bar deadlift competitions; 2nd in the one-man sled drive relay and tug-of-war tournament; and 1st in the 100-yard tire flip relay.

Other Solanco gridiron stars who performed well in the competition include the Solanco Black team, consisting of Jake Smolik (r-SR), Caden Fuller (r-JR), Deven Rapant (r-JR), Connor Sprout (r-JR), and Jesse Balderson (r-SO). Solanco Black finished 10th the bench completion and fireman’s carry.

Solanco White, consisting of Danny Bird (r-SR), Michael Keefer (r-SR), Connor Charles (r-JR), Cole Gladfelter (r-SO), and Connor Smith (r-SO), placed 15th in the hex-bard deadlift.

Solanco Grey, consisting of Ty Davis (r-FR), Wesley Houck (r-FR), Hayden Knocke (r-FR), Blaine Plastino (r-FR), and Jaden Summers (r-FR), finished tied for 36th overall in their first time at the event.

Roadgraders2WEB“In addition, our student-athletes received numerous compliments from coaches and student-athletes from other schools for our teamwork, sportsmanship, and gutsy performances,” Hammel said.  “All four teams did an outstanding job representing our football program, school, and community.  Each one of our young men should be proud of their efforts.”
