At its annual parent workshop in April, the Title 1 Reading Department introduced the elementary Solanco Reads! Program. “This is an exciting new program they hope to continue every summer for kindergarten through fourth grade students,” Solanco Title 1 Director Sandy Haines said. “Studies have shown that reading books with a parent or other adult over the summer helps prevent a decline in students’ hard-earned reading achievements made during the school year.”

The Title 1 department surveyed students to ask them what topics they would like to read about, who their favorite authors are, and if there are any book series they would like to read. Title 1 reading specialists have chosen fun and engaging books for the program. “There will be small incentives along the way, as students read more and more books,” Sandy Haines said. “The community is supporting the Solanco Reads! Program by providing bigger prizes – a free pass to the SECA pool, a coupon for free ice cream from Son’s, and others.”

Parents interested in having their child participate in Solanco Reads! must attend a brief informational session. Sessions will be held at each Solanco elementary school. If a parent is unable to attend a training session at their child’s school, they may attend one at a different elementary school. Call that school’s office to sign up for the session.
