Odyssey of the Mind teams advance to states

| March 11, 2019

Solanco’s high school, middle school and elementary school Odyssey of the Mind teams provided impressive performances during the regional tournament at Millersville University, and the high school team and a team from Smith have advanced to the state Odyssey of the Mind Tournament to be held April 6 at Pocono Mountain East High School.

The high school team finished second in the regional by “creating a giant smart phone with a mechanical ‘app’ that hid throughout the performance,” Solanco Odyssey of the Mind coach Caley Roark said. Congratulations to team members Skylar Eshleman, Mia Grinestaff, Katie Jensen, Lexi Hesler, Andrew Lau, Bailey Willis and Lance Workman.

The Smith Middle School team members who earned an invitation to states by finishing second out of 11 teams at regionals are Emma Kline, Jacob Trimble, Harry Humbert, Aidan Todd, Kyleigh Murphy, Tae Martin and Ella Trimble. “They developed and presented a solution to a Hide-in-Plain-Sight problem,” middle school team coach Gerald Boyd said.

In addition to its team moving on to states, the high school had two other teams participate in regionals. Owen Brazelton, Gabi Dolan, Rachel Johnson, Dennis Kretzing, Azra Mutapcic and Mason Simpkins finished third by creating a motorized Segway that performed well despite some technical difficulties.

Students on the two other Swift teams, one of which finished fifth and the other which finished eighth, are Brandi Astheimer, Brady and Josie Janssen, Joseph and Joshua Craig, Lexi Groff, Mia Daniel-Morales, Grace Pursel, Autumn Butler, Brianna Dale, Taylor Sexton, Owen Underwood, Ben Williams and Dom Abrogast.Odyssey of the Mind - EL
