Five star athletes for Hall of Fame induction

Four talented and hard-working former standout Solanco athletes, and a long-time supporter of sports programs, have been selected for induction into the Solanco Athletic Hall of Fame. Congratulations to Ronnie Perry, Robert Martin, John Glackin, Richard Herr and Ronald Althoff on their all-star athletic accomplishments. In addition, they have had positive impact on local youth as coaches, and through the leadership they have provided in the development of local youth athletic programs.

Hall of Fame - Ronnie PerryWEBESOLRonnie Perry, Solanco Class of 2013. Three varsity letters in wrestling. Two-time champion at the Mule Classic wrestling tournament. Second place finish in districts and seventh in states. Following his Solanco career, Perry has been incredibly successful as a student and a wrestler at Lock Haven University: 2018 national runner-up at 149 pounds, 2018 All-America recognition, 2018 Male Senior Student Athlete at Lock Haven, 2018 Academic All-America recognition, two-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) champion, and 2018 PSAC Wrestler of the Year honors. Ronnie Perry is currently a volunteer assistant wrestling coach at Lock Haven and in the Master’s Program for Sports and Exercise Psychology at Lock Haven.

Robert D. Martin, Solanco Class of 1976. Two varsity letters each in track and football, captain of both teams during his senior year. In 1976, Martin earned a District III Class AA gold medal in javelin, and a silver medal in the javelin at the Lancaster-Lebanon meet. Coached track and field at Solanco High School for 10 years. A Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps (1978-1982), guarded American embassies in several countries. Robert Martin lives in Quarryville.

John A. Glackin, Solanco Class of 1974. Two varsity letters in both soccer and basketball, and Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 2 First Team All-Star in both sports. A goalkeeper in soccer, was Most Outstanding Player in Section 2, and named to the Pennsylvania All-State Team. A goalkeeper at Kutztown University, Glackin tied the school’s all-time record for most shutouts in a season. Twenty-three years of fast pitch softball for Peach Bottom and other local teams, Solanco boys JV basketball coach, and an assistant varsity coach for Solanco girls basketball. “The things I remember most are the wonderful relationships with teammates, coaches and opponents.” John Glackin lives in Mt. Joy.

Hall of Fame - Richard HerrWEBRichard A. Herr, Solanco Class of 1957. Three varsity letters in football, captain of Solanco’s 1956 football team, and all-county honors during his junior and senior years. As a senior, named “Ballplayer’s Ballplayer.” A star on offense, defense and special teams, Herr played the entire 48 minutes of a game against Elizabethtown. Played center on the Lancaster County Mohawks 1964 semi-pro football team. In 1972, Herr was involved in the creation of the Solanco midget football program and coached the A team. In 1985, named to the Solanco All-Time All-Star Football Team. Richard and Norma Herr have been married for 60 years and live in Quarryville.

Ronald Althoff, Penn State University, Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, and a Master’s Degree in Agriculture Education. An agriculture teacher at Solanco from 1973-2003, Althoff was a part-time bus driver for Solanco sports during much of his teaching career, and has driven more frequently in retirement. From 2012 to present, has participated in Solanco athletic field maintenance and preparation. Served as scorekeeper for varsity and JV girls basketball from 2002-2012. Ronald Althoff and his wife Deborah live in Quarryville.
