Solanco singers selected for choral festivals

| October 27, 2015

Talented Solanco singers “have had an awesome audition season for the choral festivals,” and Solanco music teacher Erin Brubaker said Solanco will be well-represented by the outstanding vocalists who have been chosen to participate in the county and district chorus festivals this fall.

The following students have earned the opportunity to participate in the Lancaster-Lebanon Music Educators Association (LLMEA) County Chorus Festival to be held in January at Lebanon High School:

Altos: Kara Richards and Mady Weyman (alternate).
Tenors: Ben Weyman and Tyler Turpen.

In addition, the following students were selected for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 7 Chorus Festival to be held in February at Hempfield High School:
Sopranos: Emilie Stocker, Gloria Steinhauer, and Bethany Sheaffer.
Alto: Kara Richards.
Tenors: Tyler Turpen and Ben Weyman.

During the district chorus, the singers will also be auditioning for the PMEA Regional Chorus.

Students had to learn two professional level pieces for these auditions. “The process for learning these pieces started in May, continued over the summer and got really involved when we came back at the end of August,” music teacher Erin Brubaker said. “Students learned ‘Regina Coeli’ by W.A. Mozart and ‘Os Justi’ by Anton Bruckner.” The County Chorus auditions were held September 26 and students sang excerpts from both of those pieces in a blind audition for three judges. The audition for District Chorus on October 24 was similar except they had to compete against singers from eight central Pennsylvania counties. There were about 100 singers in each of the soprano sections, over 80 in the alto sections, and about 50 tenors basses in their respective sections. Only the top 25 made it from each of the eight sections (soprano 1, soprano 2, alto 1, alto 2, etc.).  The singers who are going on to the District Chorus Festival will have to learn seven new pieces of which two will be chosen for the regional level audition.
“My philosophy has always been that the students will get out of these auditions what they put into them,” Brubaker said. “I’ve see so much hard work and growth in these past few months – it is very rewarding to me as well as the kids to see their hard work pay off. Many congratulations to all of the Solanco singers who auditioned this fall and to those who will be moving on to represent the music department!”

Congratulations and best of luck to Solanco’s talented and hard-working singers!
