Solanco Athletic Hall of Fame inductees

Six new members will be inducted into the Solanco Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, October 2. Congratulations to Robert Aspril, Dan Baughman, Harry Bleacher, David Bleacher, Michael DeBerdine and Taylor Kreider - award-winning and record-setting athletes who had outstanding careers in Solanco football, basketball, baseball, wrestling, track & field and soccer. After high school, their accomplishments included excelling in college athletics, playing professionally, and becoming successful coaches, sports officials and business people.

Robert Aspril – Solanco Class of 1953:

Hall of Fame - AsprilWEB10 varsity letters – four in baseball, two in basketball, and three in football.
Lineman on Solanco’s very first football team.
Pitcher for Elizabethtown College.
Signed a professional contract with the Cleveland Indians and earned all-star recognition while pitching for a pennant-winning minor league team in Florida.
Played with greats Roger Maris, Bill White and Cookie Rojas.
Held the national American Legion strikeout record with 19 in seven innings.
Twenty years after graduating from Solanco, Robert earned a degree in business administration at Elizabethtown College.
Retired following a 35-year career as manager of a furniture business and six years as employment coordinator for Lancaster County.
As a baseball coach, Robert’s teams won the New Era Tournament (1979) and the District American Legion championship (1980).
Robert and his wife Jane have been married for 55 years and live in Lancaster.

Dan Baughman – Solanco Class of 1974:
Hall of Fame - Baughman2Four varsity letters in track & field and three each in basketball and football.
Member of several Solanco track & field championship teams.
Played football at Lock Haven University where he majored in health and physical education.
Served as Solanco’s Athletic Director from 1997-2014 during which he initiated the Solanco Athletic Hall of Fame. Other projects included the renovation of the football field and track, the addition of one baseball field and five soccer fields, and the construction of the new weight room at the high school.
In 2010, named the Athletic Director of the year for the Lancaster-Lebanon League, District 3, and Region 5.
Dan and his wife Karen have been married for 37 years and live in Quarryville.


Harry Bleacher – Solanco Class of 1955
:

Starred in football, wrestling and track.
Played semi-pro football.
Successfully coached midget wrestling for 16 years and midget football for 15 years.
As a YMCA coach, his teams finished 1st one time, 2nd five times, and 3rd four times in the state YMCA wrestling tournament.

 

 

David Bleacher – Solanco Class of 1978
Four varsity letters each for football and track and field.
Self-employed with David W. Bleacher Concrete & Construction Services in Quarryville.
David and his wife Sheri (Kilgore) Bleacher have been married for 23 years. Their daughter Megan is a sophomore at Messiah College, son Cody attends Solanco High School, and daughter Jenna is a student at Swift Middle School.

Michael DeBerdine III – Solanco Class of 1983:
Hall of Fame - DeBerdine2Solanco’s All-Around Male Athlete in 1983.
10 varsity letters in track and field, football and wrestling.
Captain of the wrestling team and as a senior qualified for districts, and won the Carlisle Tournament.
A defensive back and key special teams player on the football team, earned Lancaster-Lebanon League 2nd team and honorable mention all-star recognition.
On the track team he ran 100 through the 800, and was a member of several relay teams, including the 4×800 team that set a Lancaster-Lebanon League record that stood for 20 years.
Majored in business administration-management at Franklin & Marshall College.
Award-winning football official (referee) at the high school and collegiate levels (including the Patriot and Ivy leagues).
Assistant football coach at Solanco, a volunteer and coach with Challenger Little League, and a coach for midget football, baseball and youth lacrosse. President and CEO of Rhoads Energy Family of Companies.
Michael and his wife Deb Grosh DeBerdine have been married for 24 years and live in Millersville.

Taylor Kreider – Solanco Class of 2010:
Hall of Fame - KreiderFinished her career as the all-time leading scorer in Solanco girls basketball history with 1,220 points.
Led the team to the Section II championship.
Lancaster-Lebanon League Section II MVP and a first-team all-star.
Four varsity letters in basketball, two letters in cross country, and four in soccer along with first team soccer all-star honors.
Scored 1,107 points during her three-year collegiate career at Elizabethtown College; graduated as the school’s career leader in rebounds per game (10.7).
Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year in 2013-2014, and named to the All Mid-Atlantic first team.
In 2012-2013, averaged a double-double with 15.9 points and 11.5 rebounds per game, and finished tied for 18th in the nation in rebounding.
Degree in business management with a minor in communication.
Current head coach for the Solanco JV girls basketball team and an assistant coach for the girls varsity team.
Lives near Willow Street with her parents Ken and Tanya Kreider, sister Amanda and brother Will.
