Smith - Math students2WEBSmith Middle School 8th grader Aidan McBride (center) put in an exceptional performance in Chicago during the National MATHCON Test! Aidan scored a 227, which was good for 13th place among the approximately 700 eighth graders who took test! The top math students in the U.S. in grades 6 through 12 took the test (about 700 students per grade level), and the Solanco School District is very proud of Aidan’s remarkable results on the 8th grade test!

Aidan McBride qualified for the national exam in Chicago by scoring in the 99th percentile on a MATHCON exam taken recently by 45,000 students nationwide!

In addition to Aidan, Smith students Azra Mutapcic (left) and Faith Rineer (right) also excelled in the preliminary exam. They both scored in the 97th percentile, and those very impressive scores got them elected as alternatives to the national exam.

Smith Middle School math teacher Ed Novakoski said the students are “Determined, driven and goal-oriented,” and they have made Smith Middle School and the Solanco School District proud.

The Solanco Education Foundation, very proud of Aidan’s accomplishment on the preliminary exam, provided his family with $1,000 to offset the cost of their trip to Chicago to ensure that Aidan would have the opportunity to represent Solanco in the National MATHCON exam. The Solanco Education Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides funding for student scholarships and teacher grants to inspire greater academic achievement in the Solanco School District. The foundation’s largest fundraiser is its annual Fall Shoot-Out Golf Tournament held at Meadia Heights Golf Club; this year’s tournament will be Friday, September 11 (call 786-5617).
