Wizards - bannerWEBIn what promises to be a wildly exciting and incredibly entertaining match-up, a basketball game featuring the talented Harlem Wizards against Solanco teachers and administrators will be played at Solanco High School on Monday, November 24, with opening tip-off at 6:30 p.m. According to the Harlem Wizards website, “At the Wizards game fans see amazing basketball talent combined with hilarious comedy. The athleticism, tricks, fancy teamwork and ball-handling wizardry, plus wild dunks not even seen in NBA games, engages and wows the most avid hoops fans. The comedy is for everybody. The Wizards look to push the envelope on fun, combining pre-planned comedic acts with spontaneous humor that fans of all ages will find laugh out loud funny.”

The spectacular plays and side-splitting antics of the Wizards will be for a very good cause, as proceeds from the game will be used to support the Solanco Mini THON which raises funds for childhood cancer prevention and treatment. Solanco’s first-ever Mini THON was held last February, and while the goal was to raise $6,000, students, teachers and others well excelled that goal with an amazing $21,000 raised for the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital.

Prices for Wizards tickets purchased in advance of the November 24 game are $8 for students and $10 for adults. Tickets purchased at the door are $10 for students and $12 for adults.

The upcoming overnight Mini THON will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, February 6 and will continue into the early-morning hours of Saturday, February 7. While activities and details are still being planned, last year’s Mini THON featured a variety of dance and other activities, including line dancing, a “battle of the bands,” karaoke, a cupcake decorating contest, bobbing for apples, face painting, a scavenger hunt, basketball, dodgeball, volleyball, scooter races, and opportunities for students to create cards for children with cancer. Hot dogs, chips, ice cream and refreshments were available. Last year, FFA students prepared breakfast for participants early Saturday morning.

The Mini THON is organized by Solanco High School students in the National Honor Society, Varsity, Ophelia and other clubs at the high school. Solanco High School math teacher Brenda Lloyd said high school students will be on their feet and active for 12 hours in recognition of the struggles confronting children with pediatric cancer.
