High School - Marissa Witmer webSolanco High School freshman Marissa Witmer is receiving national recognition for her outstanding academic achievement and determination to pursue a career in medicine. Marissa has earned a prestigious nomination to attend the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Washington D.C. February 14-16.

A news release from the National Academy of Future Physicians states that during the three-day congress, Marissa and other top students from across the United States will “hear Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science winners talk about leading medical research.” The students will also learn about cutting-edge advances in medical technology, and they will speak with deans from Ivy League and top medical schools about what to expect in medical school.

Marissa was nominated by Dr. Connie Mariano, Medical Director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists, based on Marissa’s “academic achievement, leadership potential, and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine.”

Marissa was “excited and surprised” to receive the nomination, and she is looking forward to the opportunity the congress will provide to meet and develop long-term friendships with students her age who share the “same motivation to be in the medical field.” Marissa plans to become a surgeon, and while she has most of her high school career still in front of her, she has started looking at colleges “that have a good biology program.”

According to the National Academy of Future Physicians, “The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who want to become physicians or go into medical research fields. The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country who aspire to be physicians or medical scientists, to stay true to their dream and, after the event, provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal.”
